President Obama addressed the nation from the Oval Office Sunday night in an effort to calm a collective rising fear in the United States, and to address three things that have dominated the headlines as of late: the tragic mass shooting in San Bernardino, mass shootings in general, gun control and last but certainly not least, terrorism.

In the more than 13-minute speech, he attempts to breakdown the solutions — the answers — to the problem and goes into the measures he and the government has employed and is employing against the threats that have shaken the core of the Free World.

Here’s the preamble to his plea:

“The threat from terrorism is real. But we will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL [ISIS] and any other organization that tries to harm us. Our success won’t depend on tough talk or abandoning our values, or giving into fear. That’s what groups like ISIL are hoping for. Instead we will prevail by being strong and smart … resilient and relentless. And by drawing upon every aspect of American power. Here’s how.

Here are the components, in short, in his plan to “destroy” ISIL (ISIS):

  1. Military (airstrikes, special forces, coalition forces, etc.)
  2. Disruption and destruction (cutoff ISIL’s finances, foil plots and recruiting, utilize newfound “intelligence sharing”, counter ideology)
  3. End Syrian War (promote ceasefires, alleviate refugee crisis, consolidate focus in fight against ISIL)

Here are the components, in short, to his plan to end mass shootings:

  1. No Fly List gun control (Congress should act to make sure no one on the No Fly List is able to purchase a gun)
  2. Assault weapon control (Obama urges to make it “more difficult” for Americans to buy powerful assault rifles and their like)
  3. Stronger immigrant screening (for those who come to America without a visa, to see if they’ve previously been in war zones)

He also urged Congress to pass legislation to authorize military force in both Iraq and Syria, but then coupled it by stating that we shouldn’t get into a long, drawn-out ground war with thousands of troops. Rather, continue with what we’re currently doing, and what he mentioned above (bombs from air, elite military aiding native forces, etc.).

He stuck up for Islam and Muslims, saying that ISIS and other extremist groups are nothing but thugs and killers and don’t represent Islam in the way most do in America and throughout the world. But, that Muslim communities must “speak out” and stand up to misguided ideas and radicalization and stop it from spreading.

POTUS finished it out with this:

“My fellow Americans I am confident that we will succeed in this mission, because we are on the right side of history. We were founded upon a belief in human dignity. That no matter who you are or where you come from, what you look like or what religion you practice, you are equal in the eyes of God, and equal in the eyes of the law. Even in this political season, even as we properly debate what steps I and future presidents must take to keep our country safe, let’s make sure we never forget what makes us exceptional. Let’s not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear. That we have always met challenges, whether war or depression, natural disasters or terrorist attacks, by coming together around our common ideals as one nation and one people.

“So long as we stay true to that tradition, I have no doubt that American will prevail.”
