A group of veterans who had just participated in a Veterans Day ceremony this past Friday were riding their motorcycles near a picturesque New Jersey park when they made a common discovery: a fellow biker was on the shoulder because his hog had stopped running, leaving him stranded.

However, the former service members and current members of the Freehold American Legion in the N.J. town of the same name did an uncommon thing. They stopped their festive day, and tended to the rider in distress.

“Bikers gotta stick together,” one of the participants, Dan Barkalow said to the Associated Press.

“I stopped to see if he needed help, and it was Bruce.”

As in rock music legend Bruce Springsteen. Native son of Freehold.

More from the AP:

Barkalow says they tried to help get his bike running, but when they couldn’t, Springsteen — wearing a brown riding jacket and a red handkerchief — hopped on the back of Ryan Bailey’s bike and they headed to a local bar.

“We sat there and shot the breeze for a half hour, 45 minutes till his ride showed up,” Barkalow said. “Nice guy, real down to earth. Just talked about motorcycles and his old Freehold days.”

Springsteen was raised in Freehold and still lives in New Jersey. The American Legion post says Springsteen is eligible to join since his father was a veteran.

“It was nice to help out,” Bailey said. “One Freehold person helping out another.”

Barkalow, along with Ryan Bailey and Bob Grigs, represented Post 54 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel. According to the group’s Facebook page, after the pickup and the suds Springsteen got the vets’ names and telephone numbers, for a potential ride in the future.
