The ravaging waves of Hurricane Joaquin sunk a cargo vessel with 33 crew members. The U.S. Coast Guard is currently combing coastal waters to rescue survivors from the wreckage.

A 730-foot long container ship named El Faro disappeared Friday in the Caribbean after getting caught in the hurricane’s 130 mph winds. On Monday, the Coast Guard announced that the vessel sunk nearby the Bahamas. The debris field caused by the shipwreck spans 225 square miles. Ninety-six hours after the vessel last lost contact with shore officials, only one body has been recovered.

Coast Guard teams are conducting a massive search for the 32 other crew members. “We are still looking for survivors and any signs of life,” said Coast Guard Capt. Mark Fedor. “We are not looking for the vessel any longer.”

The search mission for the vessel actually began Friday, but turbulent conditions made it too unsafe for the Coast Guard to move forward. Fedor said servicemen started searching on Sunday, when the weather had calmed.

Twenty-eight of the ship’s crew are American, and five were Polish. The search is ongoing.
