On June 2 of this year, the Blue Angels lost one of their members, Captain Jeff Kuss, in a tragic accident.

While his absence is still hard to bear, the show must go on, not only because it’s what the Blue Angels do (they perform approximately 70 air shows each year) but because the military community knows it’s what Jeff would’ve wanted. It’s what he lived for.

So now, officially, Capt. Jeff Kuss’ position as Blue Angel #6 opposing solo pilot will be taken over by Cmdr. Frank Weisser a former Blue Angel who toured with the flight demonstration team from 2008 to 2010.

Weisser is from Atlanta, Georgia and attended the United States Naval Academy, where he received his degree in mathematics, in 2000. He then reported to the Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., for aviation indoctrination and completed primary flight training. Later, he moved to Naval Air Station Meridian, Miss., for intermediate and advanced flight training. Weisser served in Iraq from 2005 to 2006 and flew 34 combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this time he reported to “War Party”, officially Strike Fighter Squadron 87, and lived aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

In September 2007, Weisser joined the Blue Angels and served in a number of positions during his time with them.  These included: Narrator, Key Influencer and VIP Pilot, Opposing Solo and Lead Solo.

We hope that Weisser’s expertise and past experience will help the Blue Angels fly through the current season and beyond. Our best wishes go out to all the pilots as they continue to “showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach.”
