Military veterans are 50 percent more likely to commit suicide than their civilian counterparts, and an estimated 22 veterans take their own lives every day. The true tragedy is that these deaths are completely preventable if the victims have the right support network ready to catch them.

The above photo was taken by professional photographer Adam Bettcher and posted to Facebook by military veteran Jonathan Leal with a simple caption:

Look carefully before you judge this picture….

22, too many….

Pickup your phone before you pickup your piece.

The photo is a clever depiction of both the causes and cure of veteran suicide. In the middle of the picture, a veteran surrounded by pill and alcohol bottles (including a Jameson bottle with a firearm inside) considers turning his weapon on himself. Surrounding him are several more military veterans from several branches who keep him from pulling the trigger by holding his hand and giving him a cellphone.

The photo has only been shared 12,000 thus far. Let’s spread awareness for veterans suicide and give it new life.
