Emma Didlake, a 110 year-old WWII veteran, enjoyed an all expenses paid honor flight last month to Washington, DC so she could meet President Obama. She passed away on Sunday at a long-term care facility in the Detroit area.

“Emma Didlake served her country with distinction and honor, a true trailblazer for generations of Americans who have sacrificed so much for their country,” President Obama said Monday. “I was humbled and grateful to welcome Emma to the White House last month, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to Emma’s family, friends, and everyone she inspired over her long and quintessentially American life.”

Aside from meeting the president, Didlake spent her trip visiting the WWII memorial, the memorial of her favorite president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and watching the changing of the guard in Arlington National Cemetery.

“I’m saddened she’s not here, but glad that she got an opportunity to do everything in her life that she wanted to do, including meet the president,” Didlake’s granddaughter Marilyn said.
