It wasn’t planned, but a Ridgefield, Connecticut mother of a United States Marine stationed at Twentynine Palms in California has commenced a local, caring rage. All she did? Box some sweets and ship it off to her son for Halloween.

“It started because I was going to send my son some candy,” said Sharon Scott. “I decided to see if anybody wanted to donate any extra candy they had so that I could send it to his whole platoon.”

There are over two dozen Marines in her son’s platoon.

She posted what she’d done on Facebook and, since then, it’s become something the entire community has eaten up. A local real estate agent even offered her office as a drop location for anyone with incoming donations.

It’s even “snowballed” where residents are pitching in more than just sugar treats.

“I’m looking for everyday things [too], not candy,” said Scott.

She’s also requesting handmade cards and notes for the service members. Thus far, she’s racked up over two hundred bucks in shipping expenses.

“People ran with it,” she said.
