The USS Simpson, the Navy’s last Perry-class frigate, lowered its flags and shut its windows for good after 30 years of service on Tuesday. Its retirement marks the end of an era when navies battled for supremacy on the open water.

The frigate was commissioned during the end of the Cold War to seek and destroy enemy submarines. It successfully destroyed an Iranian vessel in 1988, making it the last modern American ship to sink an enemy ship. The USS Constitution, a vessel that dates back to the War of 1812, is the last ship in the Navy’s fleet to have sunk an enemy.
