Joe Walsh, the celebrated singer-songwriter and guitarist for the Eagles, announced that he will cancel his July 18 performance in Cleveland because of its ties to the Republican National Committee and the GOP National Convention.

The concert was billed as a nonpartisan fundraising event for the families of military veterans when Walsh signed on. After Walsh gave a surprise concert at Coachella and booked a 25-date U.S. tour with Bad Company, the guitarist discovered that the event would ring in the GOP Convention. He pulled out of the concert immediately.

Walsh released a full statement explaining his motivation.

It was my understanding that I was playing a concert which was a non-partisan event to benefit the families of American veterans on Monday, July 18 in Cleveland. The admat I approved said this specifically. Today it was announced that this event is, in fact, a launch for the Republican National Convention. In addition, my name is to be used to raise sponsorship dollars for convention-related purposes. Therefore, I must humbly withdraw my participation in this event with apologies to any fans or veterans and their families that I might disappoint.

Walsh also explained that he did not want to endorse the Republican Party because he strongly disagreed with its positions and rhetoric. Like, really strongly disagreed.

I am very concerned about the rampant vitriol, fear-mongering and bullying coming from the current Republican campaigns. It is both isolationist and spiteful. I cannot in good conscience endorse the Republican party in any way. I will look at doing a veteran related benefit concert later this year.

There’s no word yet on when Walsh’s new veteran concert will be.

Here’s a taste of what veterans in Cleveland will be missing this July.
