Tragedy struck when an Army veteran was gunned down on his own property while on his way out for his morning run.

Jonathan Michael “Mike” Gilotti, an Iraq War veteran, was shot Tuesday morning on his way to the gym in the Fort Hood area. The gunman is suspected to be behind 10 car break-ins in Gilotti’s neighborhood. Police believe Gilotti encountered this thief trying to get into his own car, and the thief relatiated by fatally shooting him once.

Gilotti was a U.S. Army tank commander, first lieutenant and platoon leader in the 12th Cavalry Regiment. He was also married and the father of two sons.

The investigation is ongoing. Police have already located a stolen Ford F-250 pickup truck the killer drove and evidence of possible accomplices.

“Fortunately for us, and from an investigative standpoint, one round was fired by one suspect holding one gun. So now that triggerman has ‘friends’ who are talking to others,” Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector told news outlets. “Maybe they thought they were going out to break into cars and not kill an innocent person who was simply going about his daily routine. We’ll see how long it takes for one of them to come forward and do the right thing. Or, they can wait on police to come for them.”

A GoFundMe page is currently raising money for Gilotti’s family.
