There is never a shortage of veterans performing heroic deeds, both overseas and back at home. Iraq War veteran Chris Poe was driving with his family in Caspar, Wash. when he saw smoke rising from the roof of a house. Without a moment to lose, Poe leaped into action.

“There wasn’t really any time to think about what you’re going to do. There was just time to do something, so the most logical thing at that point was to just see if anybody was still inside the house. So, you just do that,” Poe told local news station KCWY.

Poe first found an eight year-old boy on the first floor and instructed the terrified child to get out of the house and go across the street. The veteran than found a 14 year-old girl in the basement, who had not realized that the house was on fire, and brought her to safety.

The fire began while the children’s father was out buying them breakfast. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
