Iran is planning to build a statue of the ten United States sailors who were captured in Iranian waters earlier this year, according to an Iranian official.

Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, the Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN), described the planned statue as a “tourist attraction” that would memorialize the contentious capture of the US sailors in January.

“There are very many photographs of the major incident of arresting U.S. Marines in the Persian Gulf in the media and we intend to build a symbol out of them inside one of our naval monuments,” the IRGCN Commander told Iran’s Defense Press news agency.

The capture of the US sailors enraged many in the US who were already upset about the Obama administration’s nuclear deal with Iran. The statue, which The Telegraph reports will likely be built on a the small Iranian island Kharg, will be a monument to the perceived weakness of the U.S. by members of the IRGCN and many within the Iranian regime.
