First Lady Michelle Obama will christen the USS Illinois, the Navy’s newest and most advanced nuclear submarine, on Oct. 10. Michelle Obama participating in the keel laying ceremony of the USS Illinois in 2014, and as the ship’s sponsor her initials were engraved into the hull.

So what exactly is the USS Illinois capable of? This vessel is the Navy’s 13th ship in the Virginia class, and it is the first nuclear submarine built for the post-Cold War era. Virginia-class subs are built for a wider range of combat operations and designed to replace Los Angeles-class submarines, making them the most sophisticated submersibles on the planet. Some of the subs strengths include its vast sonar capabilities and silent movement through the water.
