Hard to believe, but Saturday will mark 25 years since President George H. W. Bush announced the start of the Gulf War, what would come to be known as Operation Desert Storm — a military operation to rid Iraqi forces from Kuwait, which Saddam Hussein and company had famously “invaded and annexed” beginning on August 2, 1990.

The conflict would also come to be known as other things, like the Persian Gulf War or the First Gulf War or Gulf War I or the Kuwait War or First Iraq War or simply, the Iraq War (it was also codenamed Operation Desert Shield).

Here’s Dubya’s father making it official on television on that fateful day a quarter century ago on January 16, 1991.
