The following video captures United States Army soldiers performing the dignified transfer of elite U.S. military member Master Sergeant Joshua L. Wheeler at Dover Air Force Base on Saturday, with Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Army Chief of Staff General Mark A. Milley among the dignitaries present.

Wheeler was the first American soldier killed in action combatting ISIS, and the first U.S. combat casualty in Iraq since 2011.

Part Cherokee and born and raised in the hardscrabble eastern region of Oklahoma, Wheeler’s esteemed Army career saw him ascend to the loftiest of heights as a member of the branch’s nonpareil group known to most as Delta Force. He was awarded 11 Bronze Stars from 14 deployments.

He is survived by his wife and four sons, as well as his grandparents.

The fallen hero is expected to be buried in North Carolina.

May he rest in peace.
