Former Marine general James “Mad Dog” Mattis wants you to know that he isn’t running for president. Nope. Not gonna happen.

To recap, an anonymous group of Republicans wants General Mattis to run as a third party candidate and prevent both the GOP and Democratic candidates from winning the electoral college. With a stalemate, Congress would choose the winner and appoint Mattis president.

Mattis expressed his confusion over the reported plan to draft him as a third party presidential candidate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies last week. When asked about this plan, Mattis said he hadn’t “given any thought to” a presidential run. In fact, he doesn’t really understand this whole campaign at all.

“It’s been going on for 15 months. Since coming back from overseas, this is more of a foreign country than the places overseas,” Mattis said. “I don’t understand it. It’s like America has lost faith in rational thought.”

General Mattis refused to mention which presidential candidate he did support, but he did talk about how the next president would have their hands full.

“The bottom line on the American situation is that the next president is going to inherit a mess,” he said. “That’s the most diplomatic word for it.”
