U.S. Army Capt. Chuck Nadd, the military veteran whose elaborate homecoming surprise was broadcast to 111 million viewers during Super Bowl XLVIII, is launching a new charity to help military children pay for college.

Nearly two years ago, Nadd was surprised by his girlfriend, volunteers from Veterans of Foreign Wars and Budweiser in Winter Park, where they threw an enormous welcome-home parade. Now that the confetti has fallen and Nadd’s 15 minutes of fame ended, he and his now-wife Shannon are looking to help families whose breadwinners died heroes.

Nadd’s initiative, titled Operation American Dream, will provide college scholarships to the children of fallen military members and first responders. When the Nadds were married on Nov. 7, they asked their guests to donate to Operation American Dream instead.

“I believe the greatest heroes are those who give their lives for others — here at home or overseas,” said Nadd, who spent eight months in Afghanistan as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot.

“We feel we have great work we’re called to do,” said Shannon. “There are so many who have come home injured or who have not come home at all.”
