What you’re seeing is a Hungarian Air Force pilot think quick — real quick — and save his skin by ejecting from his faulty Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet after its landing gear malfunctioned.

Pretty rare to see footage of an aviator ejecting from aircraft as it rests on the ground (albeit this time “resting” isn’t exactly the appropriate word, is it?).

Fortunately, the pilot was alive and breathing after his chute placed him on the lawn next to the runway, away from the crumpled up plane. Unfortunately, he fractured his vertebrae, and had to be taken to the hospital. According to Foxtrot Alpha, when he pulled the plug to be shot out of the cockpit his seat didn’t detach, tacking on an additional 176 pounds and making for a hard landing.

It’s the second crash of a Hungarian fighter in less than a month.
