Those crazy kids at DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) — the Pentagon’s special agency responsible for developing new technology — just unleashed a new unmanned aerial speed machine on the world.

It slices and dices the air, all while moving incredibly fast for a specific purpose. Basically, it can carry out tasks extremely efficiently … in a crowd.

Within the agency, the rapid, sensor-loaded quadcopter was developed by a specific program called the Fast Lightweight Autonomy (FLA) program. The following footage of the drone — which can zig/zag at a whopping 45 mph (or 20 meters a second) — was taken at Joint Base Cape Cod/Otis National Guard Base in Massachusetts recently.

This from Gizmodo:

Pilot-free, lightweight, smart, and wicked quick. This tech could be a huge help for military members looking to save civilians in an unpredictable emergency situation, like an earthquake zone, or gather intel in complex indoor spaces sans a human with a remote control.

Don’t make fun of the peculiar-looking airborne robot too much. It may save your life one day.
