Stanley Kubrick. Alan Alda. Joseph Heller. They can all eat their hearts out, because the following footage of free-falling, unbridled Humvees raining from German blue skies near United States Army Garrison Hohenfels to little pieces put their renowned attempts at military satire in their place for just what it is — fiction.

This? This though? This is real, and if you don’t watch it with sound you’re doing yourself a huge injustice because watching a Hercules crap out chuted heavy armored vehicles only to have them shatter like grass on a picturesque European hillside seconds later isn’t even the most inflammatory and enthralling facet of the clip. Not by a long shot.

The background commentary from the soldiers who captured the aerial fiasco, however, is. It’s the ticket. The kit. The caboodle. Turn the volume up and have it make your day.

Do be warned, though, that profanity is involved …

More on the location and the expensive failure from Foxtrot Alpha:

Hohenfels Germany is home to the U.S. Army’s Joint Multinational Readiness Center, referred to by soldiers as “The Box.” The Box is a huge 40,000 acre facility where U.S. and allied soldiers conduct large maneuver tank battles, airborne jumps and various other exercises …

This week, The Box isn’t just another spec on the big board of international U.S. military installations all across the globe. It’s a darned viral sensation.

Thanks to one major f-up.
