Two people died Thursday after crashing their Jeep Grand Cherokee into a parked F/A-18 fighter jet.

The duo was on the run from California police when they drove through the front gate at Naval Air Station Lemoore. As far as police know, they hadn’t committed any crime. The two people had only been parked on the wrong side of the highway when police stopped to see if they were ok. Before the officer could speak to them, the vehicle pealed away in the direction of the Naval base.

Pursued by police helicopters, the Jeep continued its high-speed escape down the airstrip. The vehicle lost control and crashed into the read end of the parked jet. Both passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Capt. Monty Ashliman said that the deceased were not military members.

“Regardless of procedures we have in place, something went wrong and we had a tragic accident,” Ashliman said. “We have got to figure out a way to prevent that from happening in the future.”

As for the fighter jet, it suffered damage to its rear horizontal stabilizer.
