Thanks to the Oculus Rift, anyone can fly an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality (VR) headset that launched on March 28. Despite some hiccups shipping out the headsets and its shocking price tag, the device received praise for its immersive technology. Game companies and media outlets alike are testing new ways to use VR to improve their own products and reach consumers.
The U.S. Air Force is the latest to jump onto the VR bandwagon.
To encourage potential recruits to explore am Air Force career, the military created an F-35 VR demo for civilians to play at select career events across the country. After donning the Occulus Rift headset, recruits can fly a virtual F-35 through a stunning canyon in the dead of night.
Ok, so it’s not exactly the same as piloting a real F-35. The aircraft’s controversial flaws, like how its radar has blind spots or how the pilot’s helmet makes it difficult to look in certain directions, are noticeably absent. But the demo does give recruits a brief snapshot of what becoming a pilot might be like.
One thing missing from the demo is a chance to fire the jet’s weapons. Thankfully, another unofficial F-35 demo does allow players to fire missiles and blow up buildings with impunity.
