The Army is currently searching high and low for a dummy missile dropped somewhere in Upstate New York. The military has been searching for the missile since Friday.
A 10th Combat Aviation Brigade Apache helicopter flying from Fort Drum to the New York Air Show at Stewart International Airport dropped a 100-pound M36 Captive Flight Training Missile somewhere along the way. The missile is nonexplosive and non-motorized, but it is built to mimic the weight and and shape of a real projectile weapon.
It’s likely that the missile simply fell out of the helicopter while it was in flight. The Army is currently retracing the Apache’s flight path in the hopes of finding the missing missile.
In the meantime, anyone who spots a 64 inch-long, 100-pound missile with the words “U.S. Army” painted on the side in block lettering, contact Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division Operations Center at 315-772-6324.
