The G.I. Bill is synonymous with covering the hefty costs of college and university tuition, but that’s not all it can do.

For the veterans who would rather pursue a career that involves an apprenticeship or another form of on-the-job training (OJT) — it can take care of some major costs, like books, housing and other supplies needed to complete the program.

Examples of Jobs That Have OJT or an Apprenticeship:

– Hotel management professional

– Plumber

– Pipefitter

– Steamfitter

– Elevator installer and/or repairer

– Iron or steel worker

– Pile-driver operator

– Electrician

– Brickmason

– Blockmason

– Stonemason

– Carpenter

– Solar photovoltaic installer

– Cement mason/concrete finisher

– Firefighter

How Do I Actually Get These Benefits?

First, check to see what benefits you have remaining. You can do that here.

If you haven’t applied yet, you can do that here.

Once you know the amount you’re working with, find a local VA office and consult them with your plan to make sure the specific OTJ program or apprenticeship is approved. You can find a location and a representative here.

Once applied and coordinated, G.I. Bill payments will be issued by the VA monthly, upon your employer or union reporting your hours.
