Remember a few days ago when we posted video of the United States Navy’s newest metal floating toy, soon-to-be-christened the USS Zumwalt, taking its “maiden spin” in the cooling waters of the Kennebec River in Maine?

Never mind that it’s still learning how to swim — it’s a bonafide hero.

Because the baby vessel (nothing infantile from the looks of it, however) and its courageous crew has already saved lives.

With the help of the United States Coast Guard, that is.

This from WMUR in Maine:

A chopper from the U.S Coast Guard and a crew from the U.S.S. Zumwalt helped rescue a fisherman in distress early Saturday morning.

Around 3 a.m., the Coast Guard received a distress call from the 45-foot fishing boat Danny Boy. The captain, an unidentified 46-year old man, was having chest pains and needed medical help. The Danny Boy was about 40 nautical miles southeast of Portland.

The U.S.S. Zumwalt, the Navy’s brand new stealth destroyer, was performing sea drills near the scene and offered to help. The Zumwalt sent a small crew to the fishing boat and transferred the captain aboard the destroyer until the USCG was able to airlift him to the Portland Jetport.

The fishing captain is now recovering at Maine Medical Center.

A win over Army in football and this? Not a bad weekend for the Navy.
