The military community is banding together to pay for the medical bills of Chris Mintz, the Army veteran shot during a school shooting Thursday. As of this posting, a GoFundMe campaign for Mintz has raised more than $80k in three hours.
Mintz was shot several times by a gunman outside his classroom at Umpqua Community College. Mintz’s decision to charge the gunman and block the door saved the lived of his classmates. However, Mintz’s heroism came at a cost. His family confirms now that he was shot seven times, not five, and that he will have to recover from two broken legs.
In his first statement since leaving surgery, Mintz told the media he hoped other students were alright. “I just hope that everyone else is OK,” Mintz told ABC News this morning. “I’m just worried about everyone else.”
On the GoFundMe campaign page, Mintz’s cousin Derek Bourgeois wrote that “The funds are going to be sent directly to Chris to assist with his recovery (medical bills, paying his bills while he out of work, childcare for his son, etc).”
Supporters left messages ranging from heartfelt thanks to heartwrenching grief on the page to thank Mintz for his sacrifice. Anyone who wishes to contribute to Mintz’s cause can donate here.
