Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, the legendary baseball player and wordsmith who earned his storied nickname on the dirt fields of St. Louis, Missouri and later went on to be a part of an unprecedented 13 World Series champion teams (both as an All-Star catcher and coach), died Tuesday night at the age of 90 according to the staff at the Yogi Berra Museum in New New Jersey.

He is survived by the three sons and 11 grandchildren.

A United Sates Navy veteran of World War II, Berra served as a gunner’s mate on the USS Bayfield during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France.

He once coined the iconic phrase “it ain’t over ’til it’s over” while managing the New York Mets in the midst of a tight division race back in 1973.
