John Moon, 101 years young, is the oldest known surviving United States military veteran who fought at Iwo Jima, in World War II. Years before he became a Marine, in 1939, he graduated from Western Illinois University, in Macomb, Illinois.

The other night, to kick off a military appreciation ceremony capped by a women’s college basketball game between Moon’s alma mater and IUPUI, the spry centenarian sang America’s national anthem.

Watch as the crowd erupts after his performance and gives him a rousing standing ovation.

Richly deserved.
