Memorial services held at national cemeteries are solemn, dignified events that help family, friends and fellow service members mourn as well as celebrate the life of the fallen.

What to Expect at a Memorial Service

A committal shelter, rather than gravesite itself, is where readings and military honors are recited and bestowed. An official is always present at this time, to guide and assist, and the ceremony itself is tailored to the family’s wishes. Full honors may include the playing of “Taps” as well as a rifle detail and other service members to present the burial flag — among other duties.
