If you’re a military veteran and during your service you and your family spent time at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune or Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River in North Carolina, then you need to be aware of the following information, and the VA resources available (health care and compensation, i.e. payments) that you may be qualified to receive.

Through scientific and medical findings, both installations has been cited for having contaminants in their drinking water. It’s also been documented that coming into contact with these contaminants has caused specific diseases later on.

Check the two lists below, one covers conditions covered for veterans, and the other for members of their family.

For Veterans

If you’re a veteran with service at Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River (from August 1953 to December 1987) and you suffer from any one of these conditions, disability benefits may be attainable.

– Adult leukemia

– Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes

– Bladder cancer

– Kidney cancer 

– Liver cancer

– Multiple myeloma

– Parkinson’s disease

– Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

When you apply you’ll need to show military records proving you served at either location for at least 30 consecutive days between the above date range (August 1953 to December 1987), and evidence that you have one of the conditions on the list.

For Family Members

For the following conditions, out-of-pocket health care costs may be covered for affected family members of veterans who meet the qualifications above.

– Bladder cancer

– Breast cancer

– Esophageal cancer

– Female infertility

– Hepatic steatosis

– Kidney cancer

– Leukemia

– Lung cancer

– Miscarriage

– Multiple myeloma

– Myelodysplastic syndromes

– Neurobehavioral effects

– Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma 

– Renal toxicity

– Scleroderma
