Bree Newsome, an African-American woman and self-proclaimed “freedom fighter” from North Carolina, climbed the 30-foot flagpole on the grounds of the South Carolina State House early Saturday morning and removed the Confederate flag from its lofty post as part of a rampant social media campaign and its ubiquitous hashtag “#TakeItDown”.

Newsome and a man were both arrested for the act and the flag returned.

According to the BBC, the flag was first raised by the state’s government in 1962, in protest of the growing civil rights movement.
