Memorial Day is a day to honor the brave men and women who died while protecting the United States of America and all that it stands for. The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment — otherwise known as The Old Guard or the “Escort to the President” — honors those military members who have fallen by carefully placing a flag at almost a quarter of a million grave sites over more than 600 acres at Arlington National Cemetery.

It’s not all they do when it comes to honoring those who have passed. Old Guard soldiers also “perform all dignified transfers of fallen soldiers returning to the United States.”

Sentinels — who famously guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — also are part of this unique U.S. Army regiment.
