Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl didn’t possess or exhibit any intelligence when he walked away from his post in Afghanistan and fell into enemy hands. In the latest episode of ‘Serial,’ however, Bergdahl told podcast host Mark Boal that the Taliban attempted to extract outrageous information from him anyway.

The latest episode focused on the soldier’s experience in captivity and escape attempts. He described to Boal how he was forgotten in a closet, chained spread eagle to a bed and confronted with bizarre questions he couldn’t answer. Bergdahl said that when his guards were bored, they would shave his beard into a new shape and start quizzing him on American culture and politics. Their questions ranged from soda to President Obama’s sex life.

“They ask you, is Obama gay and sleeps with men?” Bergdahl remembered.

While Jason Bourne may have had such intel (and Bergdahl fancied himself a Jason Bourne-type) the soldier had little to say on the subject. He told Boal that he had to show an amount of confidence and certainty when he answered because “if you show hesitation … they think they’re onto something.”

The Taliban also asked him how American soldiers got prostitutes and what alcohol they liked to drink. We’re guessing Bergdahl had an easier time with those questions.

A bizarre detail Bergdahl gleaned from his captors during these interrogations was that the Taliban is a huge fan of Mountain Dew.

“They love Mountain Dew,” Bergdahl said. “If you want to piss people off in that country, all you do is cut off their sugar supply.”

The soldier was arraigned last week for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, but entered no plea.
