Former Governor Mike Huckabee may not have scored a spot in the main GOP presidential primary debate, but he did manage to capture some attention with some head-scratching comments about the military and Millennials.

When Wolf Blitzer asked Huckabee how many “boots on the ground” he would deploy to combat ISIS, the candidate answered that he was “comfortable” with 10,000 to 20,000 troops. Suddenly Huckabee’s criticisms of President Obama and the shrinking of the U.S. military picked up speed, only to spiral out of control when he suggested that the best way to increase boots on the ground is to recruit pot-smoking, underemployed Millennials.

We have to get our military rebuilt from the ground up. And all over America I hear young people say, would you tell me what you’re going to do? Would you give me free college? Will you make sure that I can have medical marijuana?

You know what we ought to tell young people? We aren’t going to give you anything. We’re give you the opportunity to get off your butt and go serve your country and secure your freedom. Because if you don’t, nobody else is.

Huckabee has never served in the military. In fact, no Republican or Democratic presidential candidate–with the exception of Lindsey Graham, who served in the Air Force for 33 years–has completed any military service. Weird how easy it is to tell other people to go to war then do it yourself.
