Eagles of Death Metal are an American rock band from Palm Desert, California.

But on the night of November 13, 2015, they were on stage at Le Bataclan in Paris, France, playing to an excited, happy, dancing audience when terrorists rushed in with automatic rifles, grenades and suicide vests. They went on to kill 89 people in attendance, including the band’s merchandising manager, Nick Alexander.

In the following VICE interview, the musicians reveal that Alexander bled out to protect a friend amidst the horror. They reveal how some of them narrowly escaped death, running into gunmen in the halls of the famed music hall as they tried to leave its confines. Their technician recounts how he was shot, only to fall and play dead on a ground that rushed with blood of the victims being slaughtered mere yards from him.

It might not be something you want to watch on Thanksgiving, a day cherished for gluttony and family and friends and happiness.

But, by the same token, you may want to watch it. Because it may make you appreciate all you have to be truly be thankful for.

The famous 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once wrote “mostly it is loss which teaches us about the worth of things”.

Yeah, watch it. It might make you tear, but it’ll also make you hug better when you see the people you love today.
