On the totem pole of vehicle chases, boat chases usually fall below car chases but above tricycle chases. This particularly Coast Guard boat chase, however, is one for the books.

A Coast Guard pursued three men in a 345-mile boast chase along the Gulf of Mexico for a stunning 20 hours. The men on the run nearly made it to Cuba before they were finally apprehended.

It all started on the morning of Christmas Eve when three ne’er-do-wells stole a boat from the Fort Myers area. The stolen vessel, a 36-foot long powerboat with three 300 horse power engines aptly named the Invincible, rammed into the local Sheriff’s vessel before taking off into the open water. It was pursued for several hours by the Coast Guard and local law enforcement, but outran them all.

“It was like something out of a James Bond or Mission Impossible movie,” Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott said.

The boat thieves brought extra fuel tanks onto the boat and bypassed several security measures in order to steal it from the dock. The Invincible was valued at $350,000. Luckily, the thieves did not bring firearms with them during the boat heist.

The Coast Guard finally caught up with the Invincible after it had stopped 125 miles east of Cancun. The three men were promptly arrested and the vessel towed back to the United States.

“A small boat crew from the William Trump apprehended the three suspects without incident,” the Coast Guard said in a statement. “The three suspects were later transferred aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Marlin for transit back to authorities in Fort Myers.”
