To quote Gen. George S Patton, “A pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood.”

The Army takes this motto to heart by creating elaborate fake battlefields to test soldiers’ skills before sending them into combat. In order to be effective, these courses have to be as detailed and authentic as possible–right down to the goats. Missing out on those vital finishing touches or that cultural flair might leave troops unprepared to survive the real deal.

So what exactly is the recipe for the best fake battlefield the Army can buy?

A summary of Fort Knox’s wish list is actually available online. Here is a short list of the props it needed to create various set pieces for one training ground. Most of them are made from fire resistant foam.

– A fake bread stand complete with tables, chairs and 40 pieces of bread (made from foam).

– A fake fruit stand that includes bushels of foam bananas hanging from the rafters, as well as crates of foam fruit on the floor.

– An egg vendor with a total of 360 foams eggs (180 white, 180 brown) glued to the table.

– An animal pen replete with “realistic and life size” goats, cows, dogs, chickens, sheep and pigs, all of which are also made of foam. Some of these replicas weigh as much as 100 pounds each!

And this isn’t even including the military equipment or uniforms the troops will be using themselves.

There won’t be any flaming goats at this fake battlefield, but it will at least offer a slim resemblance to the villages and urban centers Americans are really fighting in.
