Go to any ballgame in America during a national holiday and you’ll most likely be treated to a special presentation: a bald eagle, and its trainer, putting on a show that involves the raptor swooping from deck to deck, ostensibly utilizing the stadium as its own personal aviary.

It’s powerful as hell. Almost as poignant as fighter jets roaring over the ballpark and vibrating your beer. Almost.

One such pro eagle in the stadium game (from the Los Angeles Zoo), faced with a gig at Dodger Stadium this past weekend for Independence Day, however, had second thoughts about going through his usual routine. Either he got spooked by something on the diamond, or, he thought to himself “wait — this is the Fourth of July! I need a beer and a hot dog!” Because next thing you know he’s booking it to the parking lot, land of the tailgates, and that was that. That was the show.

When you think about it, the move was exceedingly American. Freedom, right?

The bird’s name is Chinook, by the way …

Apparently, Chinook flew straight to the zoo’s van in the lot. His trainer met up with him and they peeled away and went back home. He’s okay. Also: he may or may not be a huge Dodger fan.
