If you took a regular cigarette-style speedboat and fed it every single steroid in Mexico, you still wouldn’t get what you’re about to see in the clip below: the USS Milwaukee** — the United States Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship that’s a proud member of the Freedom Class LCS.

It’s doing over 45 knots in the following footage, thanks largely in part to dynamic engineering and its two Rolls Royce MT30 gas turbine engines, which are extremely similar to the engines found on a modern jumbo commercial jet.

Just how powerful are these motors? A single one is rated at 48,280 hp (high-performance sports car is typically just over 600 hp). And it has two of them.

That’s like seating a horse in every seat at two Fenway Parks, then wrangling those horses to, together, pull your modest boat down the Charles River until you’re plowing through cod in the Atlantic in, oh, a few minutes? Because that’s how fast you’d be going?

See for yourself:

** – Which is Algonquin for “the good land”.
