It’s the end of an era.

Walmart built its retail empire by giving the people everything from frozen peas to lawnmowers at bargain prices. Since this is America, that also meant becoming the country’s largest firearms dealer until the customers stop coming.

In accordance with the laws of supply and demand, Walmart announced yesterday that it would no longer sell AR-15s in its stores because of low sales. Despite yesterday’s fatal shooting of two reporters in Virginia and the recent shootings in Charleston and Chattanooga, spokesmen have denied that Walmart’s decision is political.

“We previously carried modern sporting rifles in less than a third of our stores,” Walmart spokesperson Kory Lundberg said. “Our merchandising decisions are driven largely by customer demand…This happens to get more attention because of what the product is. The decision was completely based on what customers are buying and what they want.”

Though it only just won a lawsuit that attempted to force the brand to stop selling AR-15s, Walmart is gradually phasing out high-powered firearms on its own, including the AR-15 and modular sniper rifles. It stopped selling firearms in all but 1,300 stores in 2006 due to low sales, and it hasn’t sold high-capacity magazines and handguns since the early 1990s.

Instead, Walmart will focus on hunting rifles, ammo and equipment.
