Landscapers digging up shrubs nearby a Maryland McDonalds discovered more than an innocent Happy Meal prize. A live hand grenade was found buried a foot underneath pavement in the fast food franchise’s parking lot. The workers were unsure whether the grenade was real or a toy, so they called in first responders.

The military relic was safely extracted by a bomb squad, which confirmed that the bomb was live via x-ray. To protect the area in the event of a grenade blast, the bomb squad erected a 600-foot barricade in all directions.

Bomb technicians stated that had the landscapers struck the grenade with their shovel machine, everyone in the immediate vicinity would have been seriously injured or killed. A crowd close to 50 people were evacuated during the bomb extraction.

It is still unknown how the bomb made it to McDonalds. The prevailing theory is that it came from a military installation located 65 miles away from the McDonalds franchise. Authorities are using metal detectors to check the area for any additional military artifacts.
