The good news? Mike Conner, a United States Navy officer of a fast-attack submarine docked in Guam, will no longer be stranded on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The bad news? He’s no longer commander of that fast-attack submarine because, unfortunately, he’s been fired.

According to an official U.S. Navy statement, he was relieved of his duties “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command.”

He was in charge of the USS Oklahoma City.

“Commanding officers are required to possess and demonstrate the highest levels of responsibility, reliability and leadership,” said Cmdr. Brook DeWalt, public affairs officer for the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Submarine Force. “Cmdr. Conner was removed due to a loss of confidence in his ability to meet those.”

Conner has been in charge of the vessel since December 2013.

According to the Pacific Daily News, he’s been administratively reassigned to the office of Capt. Jeffrey Grimes, commander of the Submarine Squadron 15, at Naval Base Guam.

Maybe Conner won’t be permitted to leave paradise after all?
