The parade of awards for the servicemen who thwarted a terrorist aboard a European train isn’t over.

Spc. Alek Skarlatos of the Oregon National Guard will receive the Soldier’s Medal for tackling and disarming a gunman while on vacation with his friends Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler. All three men were awarded the Legion of Honour by the president of France, and Stone will receive the Airman’s Medal.

The Airman’s and Soldier’s Medals are the highest honors an airman or soldier can earn for heroism in non-combat situations.

Skarlatos was the member of the group who spotted the gunman with an AK-47 strapped to his chest and spurred his friends to act. “It wasn’t a conscious decision,” Skarlatos said. “We didn’t even have time to think about it. We just acted.” While confronting the gunman, Skarlatos wrestled away the handgun and used the butt of the AK-47 to knock out the terrorist.

Skarlatos is a member of the 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan.
