Vietnam Veterans Day, March 29, marks the date the last American troops returned home from the Vietnam War. Many veterans fought through dense jungles, severe heat and gruesome battles only to get a cold welcome from the nation they fought for. Today is our chance to show our appreciation for these unsung heroes.

A great place to spend a moment of silence remembering these veterans and their sacrifices is at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. This emotional monument records the names of every American soldier who died during the war. Visitors regularly leave flowers, flags and family keepsakes by the wall panel that holds their loved one’s name. Others peer solemnly into the memorial’s surface, allowing the thousands of names to criss-cross over their reflections like links in chain mail.

History.com put together a colorful infographic describing how many soldiers died during the Vietnam War and how the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall came to be. Check it out, and be sure to thank a Vietnam vet for their service today!
