Would you believe that this hardened, tough-nosed retired Marine in the photograph below — Donnie Dunagan — was Bambi? Yeah. As in the voice of the famous cartoon baby deer (fawn) that’s spurred millions upon millions of tear ducts all over the world to gush for decades now. The Walt Disney 1942 movie Bambi.

This is Donnie Dunagan in 1974, during his time in the Marine Corps. Even if anyone had known, it's tough to imagine anyone calling him "Maj. Bambi" to his face then anyway.
Dunagan, now 80, was a child actor you see, and he sat down recently with NPR and told the whole wacky story. It’s both touching and funny.
