The Palins and a decorated Marine are exchanging insults and filing lawsuits over a family drama nine months in the making.

The parentage of Bristol Palin’s newborn daughter, Sailor Grace, was never really a mystery. Palin broke off her engagement to Marine veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer shortly before announcing her pregnancy, and a mere five days after little Sailor was born on Dec. 23, Meyer implied on Twitter that he was the dad.

Now Meyer is pursuing legal action in order to get joint and physical custody of Sailor. In the documents published by TMZ, claims to be the baby’s biological father and requests that his ex-fiancee pay him child support.

Palin’s response to the legal proceedings was scathing. “My values are such that a real American hero doesn’t ask for child support,” she said.

During his service in Afghanistan, Meyer searched for three missing Marines and a Navy corpsman and brought their bodies to safety under enemy fire. He was awarded a Medal of Honor for his bravery in 2011, making him the second youngest recipient to earn the award.

Leading up to the birth of Sailor Grace, however, Meyer did not post anything to social media about becoming a father or show any desire to get back in contact with Palin. In fact, the Palins aren’t even sure how he got the photo he eventually posted to Twitter. While Meyer’s actions in the field were in no uncertain terms heroic, we can see how his sudden desire to be with his daughter appears suspect.

Sarah Palin, Bristol’s mother and former governor of Alaska, said Meyer is attempting to ‘save face’ after Sailor’s birth.

“For many months we have been trying to reach out to Dakota Meyer and he has wanted nothing to do with either Bristol’s pregnancy or the baby,” she wrote.
