In a real-life version of Life of Pi, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a Colombian mariner who had drifted aimlessly in a small skiff for two entire months.

“The Pacific is vast and inherently dangerous,” Lt. Cmdr. John MacKinnon said. “This mariner had great fortitude and is very fortunate the crew of the Nikkei Verde happened upon him, as the area he was in is not heavily trafficked.”

According to a Coast Guard press release, a freighter called the Nikkei Verde found the unidentified man was found on April 26 about 2,150 miles southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. He told rescuers that he and three other men set sail off the Pacific coast of Colombia in a 23-foot skiff two months ago. The vessel’s engine died, leaving the entire group stranded at sea.

The group caught fish and snared seagulls in order to survive, but only one of them survived the ordeal. No bodies were found on the skiff.

The Coast Guard won’t be investigating the incident any further because it falls outside the service’s jurisdiction.
