Another American can thank the brave men and women of the United States Coast Guard for saving their life. This time it’s a man who was kite surfing in Lake Michigan, near the Evanston lakefront just north of Chicago, Illinois.

Battling waves as big as five feet, the adventurer was scooped Monday afternoon by the USCG after he texted his friend when the mast to his pleasure board snapped.

“He was really hard to see at first. He was wearing a dark-colored wetsuit and a dark-colored flotation device. It was really hard with the waves to see him,” Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate Michael Desormeaux told Eric Horng with ABC 7 Chicago.

Thankfully, the friend that received the text phoned the local police department, which relayed the distress call to the USCG.

The man was released after he “refused medical treatment” at the Coast Guard station in Wilmette Harbor.

“Having that cell phone really helped out. Waterproof cell phone, any type of mode of communication to help call it in, because when you’re far enough off shore where people can’t really see you, it’s great to have that extra form of communication,” said Desormeaux.
