What’s not to like about wounded warriors embracing their scars in the buff?

Michael Stokes and his project ‘Always Loyal’ went viral in July 2015 after his first slew of photos gained traction on social media. The purpose of the photo series is to showcase military heroes who have survived physical trauma, but never lost their self-esteem.

“These guys have come to me very healed and ready to take the world on. I’m not giving them back their confidence. They already have it,” Stokes said of the project in 2015.

The veterans-turned-models also have control over their outfits, poses and props. So when you see a model prominently featuring their amputated limb or using a semiautomatic rifle as a makeshift fig leaf, know that the model himself made those choices in order to feel totally at ease in his own skin.

‘Always Loyal’ was originally crowdfunded on Kickstarter. The book finally published back in November 2015.

Recognize this guy? You should! This is Marine Sgt. Jose Luis Sanchez, the para-athlete who just ran the Boston Marathon with Team Semper Fi. As you can see, he has more to be proud of than just his Boston Marathon medal.

Dominic Davila, another Marine veteran, spent three years recovering after he lost his leg in 2009. He credits his service dog Sonny as the reason he bounced back. Now he is the CEO of Paws4Warriors, an organization that pairs military veterans with therapy dogs.

While Sebastian August didn’t strip down for his photo, he does showcase his sick, sci-fi inspired prosthetic arm. The Marine combat veteran now has a large following on Instragram, where he posts photos and videos documenting his physical training.
