No one can give you tough love quite like a drill sergeant or instructor. In fact, Army veteran John Burk has made a name for himself by using the self-same motivation techniques he honed as an Infantry Drill Sergeant (read: elaborate insults and guttural bellows) to promote better fitness and health.

Considering his former profession of screaming at recruits until they submit to his will, it isn’t surprising that Burk’s motivational videos consist entirely of rants. In his latest video, which has been watched 2.5 million times on Facebook, is essentially a 5 minute ramble session about why fat people shouldn’t exist.

“To the overweight people: No, I’m not going to accept you for who you are, with that bullshit excuse of ‘you should love me because I’m beautiful,’” Burk said in the video.

Burk explains that he isn’t out to get all obese people, just the ones that are too “lazy” to keep themselves and their families healthy. He told Buzzfeed News that he was inspired to make the video by posts on his Facebook fanpage.

“The soft and tender-hearted approach works for some,” Burk said, “but after having trained soldiers for over 12 years now, I know what works best: blunt, in-your-face truth that slaps you so hard that it forces you to step back and start self-analyzing to see if there’s any validity in what you’ve just been told.”

The reaction to this polarizing video is split down the aisle between horrified criticism and rapturous applause.
